Abuser

Every rage, every pounding of the table, every cruel remark hit like a big knuckled fist with a massive skull ring. People wonder how I had the strength to leave the “security” of that relationship, but he was killing me off one piece at a time.

I moved here for the peace. I found a little townhouse on stilts. It’s quiet here. My windows and lanai door are open almost every day. The Gulf breezes flow through. I can breathe. Deeply.

My neighbor is my age – tall and thin with harsh features softened only by makeup or cocktails. When I moved in she was alone and quiet and I heard nothing.
She was a respiratory therapist. She didn’t warm to me, but there was a quiet understanding of some kind. A boomer thing.

Then her daughter moved in, a model in her late 30s. A half-naked predator on the edge of irrelevance. They screamed at each other. The sound didn’t come through the walls, it came in the front and back windows. I started keeping them closed.

Then the son moved in. When Karen was at work, her son and daughter screamed at each other. I considered relocating, but the daughter found a shady boyfriend and the son was sent away for past mistakes.

He wasn’t gone long when Karen lost her job. She freaked, of course. I told her I’d be happy to help her with her resume or anything she needed.  I came to regret the offer because she became a pest.

One day she told me she’d found a roommate. Someone her daughter’s boyfriend knew from the bar. I remember thinking “uh oh” but I didn’t say anything.

Around Halloween a pickup truck pulled up with the first load. A middle-aged man was driving, but an older man stepped out the passenger side. A friend was helping him move too many possessions into Karen’s too small second bedroom.

His name was Dick. He said he was 68 years old and in real estate. He gave me his card. It had his picture on it. I sort of snickered. I didn’t need his card, he would be right next door. Turns out I did need his card.

We got to know each other because she made him smoke on the lanai. He was there most mornings when I came out to pee the dogs and feed the squirrels. We laughed that the squirrels were just about tapping their watches and scowling those mornings I fed them later than usual.

At night he’d be out there having a few smokes – and avoiding her – before he left for the bar. He was like clockwork – left for the bar at nine and came home around midnight. Those people were his family. He swore he didn’t have too many beers, but I always made sure I was never out with my dogs around the time he was due home.

We became friends. He was a friendly voice in the morning and evening. My Lhasa loved him. Sometimes he called her over to sit with him while he had his coffee.

It wasn’t long before Karen started complaining about him. “He watches Fox news!”
I think I laughed out loud.  Days later she said “he doesn’t help out around here.”  I said “he’s paying you $500 a month.” She wasn’t paying her mortgage. The unemployment checks had been delayed and she needed that money.  She said “he could at least take the trash out.” I asked “Have you seen the way he walks? He’s not in good health.”

She wasn’t hearing any of it.

Dick had a ratty old tumor cat that he loved very much.
I know because one day after he left she pounded on my door and said I had to come in and see something. I knew she wanted to have a witness in case things got legal. This was going to get ugly.

She wanted me to witness the fact that his cat was missing the kitty litter. I was supposed to be aghast at the cat’s mess. I was aghast … at the condition of the carpet and darkness of the poor man’s room.
I was also upset to be violating his privacy.

Shortly thereafter the sound of stomping and slamming started coming through the walls. Like she was wearing bricks for shoes. She pounded on my door. He had locked the adjoining bathroom door during the night. I said “he’s old, it was probably an accident.” She said “that’s what he says but I don’t believe it one bit.” I asked why she didn’t just use the downstairs bathroom, but she wasn’t in the mood for logic.

The following Sunday morning there was a knock on my door. I had been working nonstop and woke up with a migraine. She stood there expectantly with a file folder. Somehow entitled. She informed me she needed me to scan and email some things for her.

She knew I’d been working long hours. I said I was sick and couldn’t help. Period. She said ok, sorry about my headache, she’d just go to her daughter’s. She would help. As it turns out, Dick helped her get it done.

Thanksgiving came. She wished me a good one and informed me she had given Dick 30 days notice.  It was casual, as if to say they were having sweet potatoes as a side. I could not contain myself. I said “you’re throwing him out on Christmas!!!” And she said “you don’t know what I’ve been going through.” I reminded her he had helped her scan and email all that information. She said “yeah, but it took him four hours. It would have only taken you one.”

The next time I caught him on the lanai I asked how it was going. He said she was being awful, but he had threatened to get an attorney, so she gave him 30 more days. Also, her daughter had sent a vicious email about how he was wrecking her mother’s life. He said his friends at the bar had a good laugh about it.

In December Karen went to her daughter’s boyfriend’s place and stayed with them. She returned just before Dick’s deadline. She was spitting venom – stomping, slamming doors and yelling. It was coming through the wall like knuckled fists. She sent Dick into a panic. Most of his stuff was out, but he had to get the last of it himself. I heard him drop something heavy – maybe a TV - on the stairs.

That night he called. He had fallen on his hip in the driveway while carrying something out to his vehicle. He couldn’t feel his leg. I suggested he go to an emergency room. He asked if I could sneak in and get his cat for him. I told him she’d have me arrested. I felt awful, but someone else would have to do it.

He asked if we would still be friends. I said there was never any question we would be friends.

A week ago he pulled up one last time with a friend and I heard her – everyone heard her – screaming at him from her front door. He left his meds and a few last things, but he had his cat.

The dark lanai made me sad. I drove by his bar and nearly stopped. A few days ago I happened to be going out as Karen was coming in. “Did you hear?” “No, what?” “Dick died.”  I was speechless. Good thing. I would have said was “you bitch, you killed him.”

She put the last of his stuff on the porch for his kids to pick up. His son drove in from Texas, his daughter from Miami. Two cars out front, trunks open. They were both in shock.  They hadn’t been on speaking terms with their dad and now he was gone.

I came outside with Princess. His navy blue blazer was over the rail. She sniffed it and I choked back tears. I told them their dad was a nice man. I told them he loved Princess and she loved him. I hugged them and gave them my phone number.

Then Karen had the balls to come out. It was an Academy Award performance. She talked about helping him move in. How he smoked and that was bad for his health. How his cat had peed on her carpet.  While she talked to his daughter I asked his son how old Dick was. “76. He lied about his age.”

They mentioned stopping by the bar before they left. They wanted to meet his friends. Karen said she would go too. When they left she turned to me in an accusing tone and said “he didn’t even have a good relationship with his kids!” I ignored her. I said “do you know he was 76 years old?” And her jaw dropped. “I told you he wasn’t well.”

I thought to warn her not to go to the bar. I imagined her getting a piece of someone’s mind, slashed tires or a black eye. But then I changed my mind. She deserves her consequences.

I’m trying not to be furious, but I hope he haunts her ass.

And I treasure the silly business card with his picture. I will not forget my friend and the fact that he spent the last week of his 76 years at the mercy of an abuser.

The ex-BF has a new bitch already.

Saturday I picked up the last of my stuff from the ex-boyfriend's house. I've been working such long hours lately that was my first real chance. Having that hanging over my head was just a horrible, icky feeling. It would be like walking back into an evening frozen in time.

My last day at his house had included YET ANOTHER afternoon of hell out on the water off Sanibel with him blackout drunk and abusive. I told myself "not even ONE more night of this." I packed it up, I didn't even care what I left - I grabbed my dogs and went home.

His year-round home is 1400 miles away. If I want a part-time relationship with an abusive alcoholic, I'm sure I could find someone who's local.

I packed it up. I didn't even care much what I left, I grabbed my dogs and got outta there.

Well, retrieving what's left has been hanging over my head for more than a month.

You can feel the "shots" in what they pack and how they pack it. He dropped it all at the front door. Some of the stuff wasn't even mine (a pretty t-shirt of his daughter's which I couldn't have pulled over one boob let alone two) ... stuff from the fridge (like fresh ... well it WAS fresh ... horseradish) and Newman's popcorn with extra fiber. A box of All-Bran, egg noodles. Does this imply he thinks I'm full of ...?

Some of this leftover stuff was second-hand from my nurse friend who came down with her doctor husband to visit a few months back. They stayed in a lovely condo and she handed me bags of leftovers the night before I took her to the airport. We are both packrat hoarders who despise waste.

She had everything labeled and dated in tidy little zip-locks ... noodles, maplenut candies, probably seven bucks worth of stale leftovers if you were forced to replace them and buy new. Nobody would ever make you do that.

Bad Randy had bagged it and left it all in heaps by the front door.

Oh, and ANYTHING related to the dogs ... except for the spots on the carpet.

He also left the Christmas gift he gave me - a short, poofy thermal robe made of mega-thick fleece that made me look like a gay grizzly. Inappropriate for my fat ass and wholly inappropriate for the subtropics.

While I think he paid full price, I bought identical robes for my mother and daughter-in-law for Christmas for $10/apiece at Bell's outlet. Maybe they hate me now for the Michelin Man effect ... except that it's still cold where they live.

I texted Bad Randy that I had just got around to getting my stuff - the house was fine, nothing important in the mailbox ... I couldn't remember which locks to lock (he has so many) and he texted back. He sounds very sad and very angry. We are not capable of speech, only texting.

He sent a photo of his new Shih Tzu ... he didn't waste any time finding another dog. A 6 year old rescue he got after getting back to Michigan.

The new dog actually hurt worse than anything. Of course we will be systematically replaced.

He loves our (MY) Shih Tzu, gave her sweetened antibiotics by mouth back when she was tiny and fragile and we weren't sure she'd survive.

I couldn't even bring the girls with me to pick up my stuff, I knew I'd cry because they'd be so happy to see the house ... thinking he was there. And he's not.

My Shih Tzu used to sleep snug as a bug on the bulging curve of his beer belly/inflamed liver as he leaned back in the LaZ-Boy flicking through four channels at once.

So aside from getting my SMALLER AND INFINITELY MORE PORTABLE KAYAK back, I'm grumpy. He didn't intend for me to take that. It was in the shed and there are black snakes around back and nobody has been out there for more than a month. I thought "Lord knows what's gonna be in it when I pull it out" ... nothing.

Managed to get it into the Uranus (what my friend Jim calls my Saturn) with the back seats folded forward, stole an old bungie to secure it and I was off.

Driving back my trunk lid kept banging on the kayak and then came a horrid buzzing in the passenger seat. Where I had dumped all the bags.

Then I realized he'd gone through our "stash" and packed my vibrator too. I had mixed feelings about that. Well, it was fairly expensive and it has been a very long time. If you want to talk GOOD sex, you're talking years.

Now I'm only happy when I'm watching girly movies with my bitches or eating chocolate or out at Bunche Beach kayaking like I did for a few hours yesterday.

Or just riding my bike out there for a sunset like I did last night. Apparently I am 12 again.

There are much worse things than being alone. The worst is being in an abusive relationship. There is no greater loneliness.

The Pursuit of Happiness

I remember a long time ago ... I was very unhappy with my second husband. (Don't judge me - I have been a serial marrier:-)

And I went to see a shrink and he asked me "what makes you happy?" I couldn't think of ANYTHING. Fortunately, I had some wisdom at that time. I didn't blame my lack of happiness (there is a difference, I think, between unhappiness and lack of it) on my now ex. But the situation did become unbearable over time.

Fast forward 16 years.

In Buddhism we seek inner peace, not happiness. Happiness is fleeting, it always has the seed of discontent.

Yesterday was a stellar example of the principle. It was an incredible day here in SW Florida. The BF wanted to take the boat out and try our hand at fishing. Joking that we wouldn't know what we caught if we caught it, I rushed out and bought a license. I hoped he would forsake the beer cooler since it wasn't even noon yet; but I was naive.

He barked at me that I had taken too long getting my license. I left him last winter because the emotional abuse was overwhelming ... but now, with my own condo, my own car and my own job - he is not the main course in this meal of life. He is only dessert when I choose to hang out.

I considered telling him to go alone but he caught himself. When you know what they're doing, when you learn about the abusive relationship, the awareness makes it all a little less painful. Knowledge is power. (Read "The Emotionally Abusive Relationship" if you're in a relationship like this. It talks about the dynamic that brings people like us together ... we are moths to a flame drawn to others with flawed childhoods.)

Back to the day. In our two most recent boating escapades he damaged the boat. One day we will not be so lucky. You would think with the time consuming and sometimes expensive repairs he has had to make in the past month or two, he would realize maybe the problem is more him than the boat.

So I am very careful about going out with him.

Yesterday was incredibly beautiful. He had an idea about where to go in the Caloosahatchee River (which feeds out into the Gulf of Mexico) and we anchored across from the Yacht Club in Cape Coral. The tide was coming in and boats were passing. The sun was warm and I put my feet out over the back where they would be splashed; and enjoyed myself.

We started catching Sea Trout. They were beautiful, I was not prepared for that - the colors, the eyes. The BF told me to feel one and it was like satin, you could feel no scales. He said they have natural "bling" and we laughed. We released them - I think there were 12 in all. There was something big down there - several of our lures were chopped right off. They're heavy duty plastic. He said "whatever that was, we wouldn't have wanted it in the boat anyway."

We listened to CCR, Hendrix and Queen. It was idyllic. The BF was going easy with the beers, drinking very slowly. And I remember thinking "I'm happy" ... but feeling anxious about it. And I remembered the Buddhist concept of happiness having the potential for discontent.

So I just tried to shove the discontent out of my mind. When the fish stopped biting, we trolled into the Bimini Basin and I caught one more trout.

It was fun. But I was getting overheated and sunburned - I wanted to go home. The BF trolled us back to the house. That's around the time I realized that even with a minimum of beer, he was drunk.

We got into the house and he started slamming things, repeating himself every two minutes and talking loudly over the movie I wanted to watch. He wanted me to go get burgers. I had been drinking beer too - I said no. I said I would get us pizza if he wanted.

Nothing I said was right, no suggestion to his liking. So I finally ordered from Sal's online. It cost $35 I really didn't want to spend. I am so careful with money these days.

He ate, sobering some, but taking great care to complain every five minutes. He looked across at me and accused me of not "reading" (he reads two books a week - fiction). I said I do read, only it's the real stuff - NONfiction.

In his brain I had somehow slipped off into the "inadequate" zone. Is there anything more exhilarating than slamming the person who puts up with you? I work 45 hours a week while he relaxes all winter.

Drunks should have some little "crown" that appears so the world can acknowledge their brilliance and absolute control. I asked him if he realized he was being a bitch and he glared. When he started snoring, I went to bed.

I dreamed I was in my Grandma's blue living room again. I keep having that dream since she passed. I think she's pulling me in there with her. She loved that house. I grew up there. Also yesterday one of the dogs' squeeze toys made a very subtle moan. I always like it when Gram visits. I guess she follows me, even at the BF's place.

When I awakened, I pulled Bodhi (the little black and white Shih Tzu in my photos) up on me before getting out of bed and gave her many scratches about the head and chin. Then I realized that the rare times when happiness DOES appear without the seed of discontent it is in the presence of animals. A dog on the lap, curled asleep ... a cat's gentle pur. They are the only source of unconditional love; and so deserving of it themselves.

Interactions with humans take so much work.

Anyway. The BF wants to go to Picnic Island today. I have no idea what mood he's going to be in when he gets up. Picnic has disaster written all over it. Other friends are going to Sanibel today by boat and the husband loves to drink with the BF. That's who he should go with.

I'd prefer to hang out with my dogs and get shit done. That's what will give me peace.
